The Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Unit specializes in basic research to generate knowledge and develop new methodologies in the areas of genetics, cellular biology, biochemistry, and physiology of plants of agroindustrial interest or native to the Yucatan Península. Henequen, Catharanthus roseus, cocoa, marigold, annatto and coffee are some of the model plants used in our projects. Since 2003, our Unit has developed a research program directed towards the biological characterization of habanero pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) and its conservation in Yucatan. Among the goals of this program is to establish a regional germplasm bank and to improve the productivity of this species .

The Unit is also primarily involved in the training of highly qualified human resources through its Graduate Program in Biological Sciences.
